Custom Plastic Thermoforming

The process of plastic thermoforming is more than a century old and ranks among the oldest methods of processing plastic. During plastic thermoforming, a sheet or film of plastic is heated until it can be sufficiently molded. The plastic film is then placed over a custom mold while it cools. The remaining plastic that is not part of the design is then trimmed and can be reused.

A popular method of plastic thermoforming is vacuum forming. After the plastic is heated to its forming temperature, it is applied to the custom mold, where it is held to the mold by a vacuum. Products that have a fairly shallow depth, such as packaging materials, can be fabricated easily with vacuum thermoforming.

Plastic thermoforming can be used to construct the housing for many plastic products. Both medical equipment and consumer products that are housed within a plastic shell can often be made through thermoforming by using a custom mold. For small production batches, custom plastic thermoforming may also be more cost efficient than alternative processes like injection molding.
